"Quick Devotions for Kids"

WHAT TO DO EVERY MORNING AS THE KIDS ARE GOING OUT THE DOOR!

Moms & Dads:

Want to do devotions with your kids - and you NEVER seem to get it done. You don't have to schedule an hour sit-down session. Here are a few ideas to encourage you to do 2-minute morning devotions with your kids. I did these with my kids as they were going out the door to school.

I'm not a morning person, so I spent a few minutes before bed getting the items and setting them on the table. It only takes a few minutes, the house is usually quiet. You'll be glad you took the time in the morning!

Hebrews 10:22, “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith…23, let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised if faithful, 24, and let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

My kids looked forward to doing these devotions and wondered what I would have for them the next day. They liked having something tangible to take with them to school. I let them put them in a ziplock bag amd they kept them in their school bags until the end of the year. They were great conversation pieces.

The little time you use to share these verses and little devotions will make a difference during their school day!

1. A “holy” piece of material (I used an old piece of material with "holes" in it!)

The true Christian ideal is not to be “happy”, but to be “holy”. I Peter 1:15-16, “He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct”. Don’t just hang God’s words on the wall. Live them everyday of your life, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

2.Flower (real or fake)

Your heart is like a garden. You are the gatekeeper, controlling what ideas and what comes in or out. Could you use a little weeding or watering? Use God’s word & Deuteronomy 6:5, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, & all your strength. He wants to be at Home in your Heart.

3. Fake money

Don’t be fooled. Jesus is the only way! We live in a country with one of the highest incomes in the world. Yet money & things mean too much. Praise God for all your material blessings & to give you His perspective on their value. Pray that He will show you how to help people rather than get things.

4. Balloon – write something false on it

Have you ever heart something that wasn’t true or heard someone tell another. What happens? One person tells another & so on, soon the whole school knows. It’s like this balloon, blow in air, then a little more & it gets bigger and bigger, stretched to a gigantic lie. This is called gossip. Proverbs 16:20 – what happens if we don’t repeat it? Proverbs 11:13 – what to do if you hear gossip. III John 11

5. Burnt match

I Peter 4:14, “If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed; for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you” Christians have been boiled in oil, stood before lions, burned at the stake for their faith. You may be insulted or thought to be different, but way not share Christ with others – if you get “burnt”, remember I Peter 4:14.

6. Bowling pins (my old ones)

In 1933 Bill Knox put a screen up so he could see the pins – to teach spot bowling and he bowled a perfect game. He kept His eyes on the spot, not seeing the pins or his final results until the end. As Christians, we need to keep our eyes on Christ & not ourselves. We can’t “see” our final goal – we have God’s promise. I Thessalonians Chapter 4 tells us to “live in peace with each other, encourage, be kind, pray and give thanks in all things.” We can do this only by the power of Christ working in us. Also 2 Corinthians 4:18 and Hebrews 12:2&3

7. Candles - in a dark room

Each person light their candle. Burning together they give more light and glow. If we work together in our family, pray together and play together we also give off more light.
Matthew 5:16, John 1:5, John 8:12, John 9:5.

8. Crown (make one with constructions paper & sequence)

I John 3:1 “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” We should be in awe at God’s love, that He would adopt us into His “holy” family & treat us as His children. Think of a princess living in a castle adopting a dirty, ragged, homeless person, yet this is nothing compared to the honor of being God’s own!

9. Toothpick – painted red

By Jesus blood, we are all cleansed. Picking at one another, it’s easier to start a fight than to stop one. Put on God’s armor – Ephesians 6:10-18

10. Strip of wallpaper

Remodeling the house so when it is finished it will be worth the hard work. As Christians, we are being remodeled. When we fall or fail, we have to get up, turn our eyes back to the Lord and start again. We have God’s promise that someday we will be lilac Him. I John 3:2. (Song: “God isn’t finished with me yet!”)
